Bridging the gap between primary and secondary... with chocolate!

Students from CEP Sa Graduada and IES Cap de Llevant organised a “chocolate day” at the secondary school as a culmination to a series of activities designed around the book Charlie and the Chocolate Factory by Roald Dahl. 

Aware of the need to bridge the gap between primary and secondary education, teachers at both schools designed a series of lessons starting in 6th year to continue in 1st of ESO after the Summer break.  These give students a sense of continuation both in subject matter and methodology thus easing the transition from one school to another. 

The book’s chocolate theme was carried through to a big celebration which took place on Wednesday 4th June when students from 1st ESO at IES Cap de Llevant formally invited Sa Graduada students to their school.  They thoroughly enjoyed writing and customising the personal invites and could not wait to meet the person who would become their buddy for a day.  Their guests arrived at 10 am after a short walk from their school and then proceeded to take part in three different workshops throughout the morning.  The 1st ESO students had an opportunity to show their buddy the school during a ginkhana; they learnt about the history of chocolate and the use of timelines; and they investigated the different properties of chocolate whilst cooking some delicious chocolate recipes in the school’s laboratory.

Towards the end of the morning, the whole group got together and enjoyed some presentations by Sa Graduada who, in true Willy Wonka style, had invented some new sweets.  Secondary students then presented some hilarious adverts they had recorded for their own sweet inventions whilst everyone enjoyed the different chocolate delights they had prepared during the morning.

All in all, the event was a huge success which we would like to repeat in future years.
